The update will enable animated GIFs to play automatically when they are first viewed. But, the animation will only play once, even if the GIF is looped. Subsequently, the “GIF” badge appears, and users need to tap the image again to see the animation. This is to avoid endlessly looping animation which could become annoying. The update, albeit small, promises to make sharing animated memes more exciting, thus enhancing the user experience.

The auto-playing GIF feature is gradually being enabled for more users and will eventually be pushed out to all users.
