Kyocera, a long-standing player in the mobile phone industry, has announced its departure from the consumer mobile phone business. The decision comes after the company reported a loss of JPY 2.27 billion ($16.6 million) in February.
While Kyocera will no longer focus on the consumer market, it will continue serving corporate customers. The move reflects the company’s recognition of deteriorating profitability and the challenges it faces in competing with Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi and Oppo, as well as other Japanese brands such as Sharp and Sony. This departure marks the end of an era for Kyocera, which has been manufacturing mobile phones since 1989.
