Google Wallet Expands Features: Digitizing Everyday Items, Securely Saving Passes, and Introducing ID Integration

Google Wallet has been striving to create a digital wallet that offers convenience, security, and privacy for users. They have been working on expanding the capabilities of the wallet to digitize everyday items and make them easily accessible on mobile devices.

One of the new features is the ability to save passes to Wallet by capturing an image. This allows users to digitize items like gym membership cards, transit tickets, parking passes, and e-commerce return QR codes. By simply taking a photo of the item with a barcode or QR code, users can create a secure digital version of it in their Wallet.

Google is also focused on securely saving sensitive passes, such as health insurance cards, in the Wallet. They are collaborating with Humana to develop a digital version of their health insurance card, providing members with convenient and secure access to their insurance information. Additionally, in the UK, users will be able to save their National Insurance Number to their Wallet from the HMRC app.

To further enhance security, Google is working on the option to save IDs to the Wallet. Currently, Maryland residents can save their ID or driver’s license to the Wallet, allowing them to use it at TSA PreCheck lines. In the future, Google plans to expand this feature to residents of Arizona, Colorado, and Georgia. The digital ID can also be used for purposes such as booking a car with Turo or verifying online accounts.

Google is also integrating Wallet with its Messages app, enabling users to save boarding passes or train tickets directly from Messages to the Wallet. This feature will be rolled out with Vietnam Airlines and Renfe, Spain’s leading train operator. Similarly, restaurants can send reservation details to customers through systems like TagMe, allowing them to save the reservation information to their Wallet for future use.

In the pursuit of a lighter wallet, Google aims to introduce corporate badges in Wallet, granting employees secure access to buildings and facilities. They are also expanding support for local transit passes in various countries, including Germany.

Since its launch, Google Wallet has expanded to new devices and markets, currently available in over 60 countries. The company continues to prioritize convenience, security, and privacy, aiming to bring the benefits of the Wallet to users worldwide.
