Google has begun rolling out passkeys, a new way to sign in to apps and websites that eliminates the need for passwords. Passkeys can be used to sign in using biometrics such as fingerprints or face scans, or with a screen lock PIN. The technology is designed to be more secure than passwords, as it is resistant to online attacks like phishing and is easier for users to remember.
Passkeys were developed in collaboration with the FIDO Alliance, Apple and Microsoft, and have already been deployed by several services, including Docusign, Kayak, PayPal, Shopify and Yahoo! Japan. Passkeys are now available for Google Accounts, and administrators will soon have the option to enable them for their end-users during sign-in.
