Google and Apple’s Collaborative Effort to Prevent Unwanted Tracking with AirTags and Similar Devices Now Rolling Out on Android
In May, Google and Apple made a joint announcement regarding their partnership to combat unwanted tracking through devices like AirTags. Today, Google has announced the commencement of the rollout for unknown tracker alerts on devices running Android 6.0 and later. Although the current implementation is limited to AirTags, Google is actively working with tag manufacturers to extend this protection to other tracking tags in the future.
How it works: If an unknown Bluetooth tracker is detected to be traveling with you, separated from its owner, you will receive a notification on your Android device. Tapping the notification provides you with more information about the tracker and a map displaying its travel path alongside yours. Moreover, there is a “play sound” option that allows you to locate the tracker by making it emit a noise, without alerting its owner.
Additionally, when the tracker is brought near the back of your phone, it may share its serial number or other details about its owner, such as the last four digits of their phone number. The feature also guides users on how to disable the tracker entirely, preventing its owner from receiving any future location updates from it.
This initiative is aimed at preventing stalking incidents involving AirTags and similar trackers, showcasing a significant step in the right direction. Google has also included a manual scan option, enabling users to check their surroundings for trackers without waiting for an alert.
To manually perform the scan, users need to navigate to Settings > Safety & emergency > Unknown tracker alerts and tap the “Scan now” button on their Android devices. The scan typically takes about 10 seconds.
Additionally, Google has announced that it will withhold the rollout of its Find My Device network until Apple introduces comparable protections in iOS. Both companies are currently finalizing the joint unwanted tracker alert specification, slated to be completed by the end of the year. Afterward, the Find My Device network will be activated.
This collaborative effort between Google and Apple showcases their commitment to addressing privacy and safety concerns related to tracking devices, ultimately providing users with enhanced security and control over their personal data and devices.
