Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter has shared details about Apple’s upcoming Reality Pro AR/VR mixed reality headset. Set to be unveiled at WWDC 2023 on June 5th, the headset reportedly impressed an anonymous insider who tested it, despite its high $3,000 price tag.
Apple is taking a similar approach to the one it used with the Apple Watch by incorporating apps from various categories. Although a must-have app has yet to be identified, the headset will have a diverse range of apps across multiple categories, including gaming, fitness, and a virtual reality book app.
One of the key features of the Reality Pro is its ability to run most of Apple’s iPad apps, including Books, Camera, Contacts, FaceTime, Files, Freeform, Home, Mail, Maps, Messages, Music, Notes, Photos, Reminders, Safari, Stocks, TV, and Weather. Third-party apps will also be available with minimal modifications.
The headset will also have a VR portal for live sports streaming, allowing Apple to expand its presence in the live sports market. Gaming will be a significant focus, with third-party developers creating titles for the device. The Reality Pro will also feature a Wellness app with soothing sounds and voice-overs, and can be used as an external display for a connected Mac.
Video conferences will be transformed with the Reality Pro, creating virtual meeting rooms with realistic avatars of participants. The Freeform app will allow users to create and write on virtual whiteboards visible to others. Navigation can be achieved through eye and hand movements, voice commands to Siri or a connected keyboard from another Apple device.
The Reality Pro is Apple’s most complex device to date, with its high price tag potentially limiting its accessibility. However, the company is reportedly working on a more affordable version, called Reality One, although it may have some features sacrificed to achieve a lower cost.
Apple is determined to make Reality Pro a success, taking a similar approach to the Apple Watch by incorporating apps from various categories. Although a must-have app has yet to be identified, gaming will be a significant focus, and the headset will feature a VR portal for live sports streaming, a Wellness app, and the ability to be used as an external display for a connected Mac. Navigation can be achieved through eye and hand movements, voice commands to Siri or a connected keyboard from another Apple device.
