Apple has announced the release of iOS 17, a major update that aims to enhance communication experiences and provide more intelligent input on iPhones. The update includes improvements to Phone, FaceTime, and Messages, as well as new features such as AirDrop enhancements, Journal, and StandBy.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, stated that iOS 17 makes the iPhone more personal and intuitive by considering the features users rely on daily. The Phone app receives a significant update with personalized Contact Posters, allowing users to customize their appearance during incoming calls. Live Voicemail introduces real-time transcription and the ability to pick up calls while the caller is leaving a message.
FaceTime now supports audio and video messages, adding more expressiveness with Reactions such as hearts, balloons, and laser beams. Additionally, FaceTime extends to Apple TV, enabling users to initiate video calls on the big screen. Messages receive updates with a new stickers experience, improved search filters, catch-up arrow, and Check In feature for notifying others of safe arrivals.
AirDrop introduces NameDrop, simplifying contact and content sharing between devices. Autocorrect receives an update with a transformer language model, improving word prediction and sentence-level autocorrections. Dictation also becomes more accurate with a new speech recognition model.
StandBy is a new feature that displays glanceable information on the iPhone screen while it is charging in a sideways position. It can show various clock styles, favorite photos, and widgets, making it useful on a nightstand or desk. Journal is a new app that promotes gratitude and reflection through journaling, offering personalized suggestions for entries based on recent activities.
Other notable features in iOS 17 include enhanced privacy protection in Safari’s Private Browsing, password sharing with trusted contacts, mental health features in the Health app, offline maps in Maps, shared AirTags, Collaborative Playlists in Apple Music, and improvements to AirPods, Home app, Reminders, and Siri.
Privacy updates expand Communication Safety and introduce Sensitive Content Warning to safeguard users, while accessibility updates include Assistive Access, Live Speech, Personal Voice, and Point and Speak to assist users with cognitive disabilities, speech impairments, and visual impairments.
